In a significant development for anglers who rely on forward-facing sonar (FFS), Z-Man has unveiled its latest innovation – the Graph ShadZ. This newly released 3.8-inch lure promises to deliver an impressive sonar signal while mimicking a minnow’s movement with stunning realism.
"All elements of the Graph ShadZ exist to reflect a solid sonar return signal and to move and react in ways that coerce strikes from today’s toughest bass—suspended and cover-oriented fish that see tons of lures and constantly surround themselves with clouds of bait,” said Z-Man pro Luke Clausen, who has been an FFS advocate from the beginning.
The Graph ShadZ sports a unique line-through design, strategically sculpted to enhance its interaction with sonar technology. Director of Product Development Jose Chavez elaborated on its revolutionary design, stating, "Among the biggest obstacles anglers face with interactive sonar presentations—moping, Damiki or hover rigging—is having to reposition the knot on the eyelet after every cast to maintain a natural lure angle. Our objective was to give anglers a perfectly balanced lure that hovers horizontally, rather than unnaturally nose- or tail-down."

Chavez further explained the functionality of this innovative system: "Not only does our minimalist through-head channel and chin line-tie eliminate the need to reposition the knot, but a special non-abrasive conduit also protects the line from damage, hiding the knot entirely beneath the head. The result is a clean, streamlined baitfish clone that performs a powerful, eminently repeatable presentation—and reduces the need to frequently retie."
Rigging the Graph ShadZ is straightforward; anglers can easily run their line through a tubular opening and tie it off using their preferred knots, like the improved clinch or Uni knot. "Before cinching up, moisten the knot and pull tight, rotating the knot on the eyelet until it’s recessed inside the jighead. Ready to rock," noted Chavez, highlighting the user-friendly nature of the lure.
The head of the Graph ShadZ exhibits a flattened and tapered profile, along with detailed 3D eyes and distinctly sculpted features like a jaw and gills. Chavez pointed out the importance of this design, explaining, "By sculpting the head to taper outward from the nose, you get a solid sonar return from various angles, which shows up slightly better than a ball-shaped jig."
This design integrates with the durable ElaZtech® material used in the body of the lure, creating a balance that enhances both its appeal and functionality. "Although the lure comes in three weights (3/16-, 1/4- and 3/8-ounce), each head is molded from a different formula of precisely alloyed metals for a uniform side profile," Chavez stated, ensuring that every size option delivers consistent performance in terms of action and sonar reflection.

The Graph ShadZ is equipped with a 3/0 medium-wire, black nickel hook that benefits from a molded hook channel for optimal alignment. Each hook's shank features a dual molded split-grip and wire bait keeper to secure the soft body firmly. The soft and flexible ElaZtech body is designed to facilitate a lifelike motion that appeals to fish. The vertically forked tail moves with agility, while a thicker lower lobe generates an accentuated quivering motion that is often irresistible to predators.
Z-Man’s commitment to the science of sonar is evident in the Graph ShadZ’s design. Chavez noted, "We’ve applied a lot of sonar science to the design, including the exact lure attributes needed to create positive user experiences in terms of actually tracking the lure on the display." The lure even features a hollow “air bladder,” which enhances its detection by sonar, mimicking a live fish with a strong signal.
